Hamar Boy is a painting about a young tribes boy about to enter his initiation ceremony of bull jumping.
The Hamar tribal region is in southern Ethiopia. Their culture places a high value on Cattle. The most dramatic and significant ritual is Bull-Jumping ceremony which represent a life changing event for the young man who passes from boyhood in to adulthood. This rite of passage must be done before a man is permitted to marry.
Melissa has not travelled to Ethiopia herself but is incredibly intrigued by it's people and cultures.
